David Moyes has identified the players he is going to spend his £100m war chest on; Chelsea’s Juan Mata is set to move to Spain; and Tottenham’s record-signing could be about to move on already – all the top stories from the papers.
‘How Moyes will spend his £100m’ - After months of intensive scouting around Europe, Moyes has handed United’s hierarchy a list of targets that includes Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke, Borussia Dortmund pair Marco Reus and Ilkay Gundogan, Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala and Southampton’s Luke Shaw, according to the Daily Express. Moyes has reportedly been handed a £100 million war chest to rebuild United’s stale squad as the Glazer family get behind their man.
Paper Round’s view: Support and backing is exactly what Moyes needs and there is no doubt that the United squad requires an urgent injection of fresh talent. Moyes’s dilemma is that, while he desperately wants to make one or two signings this month, none of his targets are likely to become available until the summer when he may well be left with the task of buying half-a-dozen new players. Expect to see maybe one in January and three or four more in the summer.
‘Mata ready to move to Spain’ - Juan Mata will hold showdown talks about his Chelsea future this week with Atletico Madrid ready to pounce, according to the Daily Mirror. Atletico have been lined up as potential suitors in January with the Spanish club hoping to sign him on loan with a view to a permanent move in the summer. Mata has told friends he is "angry" at his treatment, after being substituted at Southampton on New Year's Day in the latest in a long line of snubs by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.
Paper Round’s view: Fans were supposed to assume that Mata was happy being a member of Mourinho’s squad, but his recent displays of petulance belie such contentment. Mata is very understandably concerned about his World Cup place and knows he could miss out on the defending champions' star-studded squad for Brazil unless he regains a more regular spot at Chelsea. His best option may well be to move on and Chelsea would likely only allow a move abroad.
‘Tottenham’s Lamela ready to leave already’ - Tottenham's record £30m signing Erik Lamela, who only signed for the club last summer, could already be on the move. The 21-year-old’s agent has been speaking to Serie A sides Inter Milan and Lazio about moving on loan for the rest of the season, according to a report in The Sun.
Paper Round’s view: It has quite clearly been a miserable time so far for the young winger in London but Spurs are not going to allow their huge investment to be wasted by a loan move back to Italy. Lamela needs time to adapt to the Premier League and to settle in at Spurs and he will surely get that time as Daniel Levy is not a man to allow a prized asset to slip away into the night.
