Juventus and Chile forward Arturo Vidal is being held by police who
say the footballer was driving under the influence of alcohol when he
crashed a Ferrari in the outskirts of Santiago.
Vidal, 28, who suffered minor injuries in the crash late on Tuesday, will face a local judge on Wednesday.
"The driver of the red vehicle was under the influence of alcohol," said police colonel Ricardo Gonzalez.
Vidal is on international duty with host nation Chile at the Copa America.
He was treated in the emergency room at the San Luis de Buin hospital in the Chilean capital. Television pictures later showed him leaving the hospital in the back seat of a police car.
"Unfortunately I was involved in a traffic accident,'' Vidal wrote on his Twitter account, in Spanish. "Luckily we are all well and calm. Thanks for worrying."
Vidal scored twice in Chile's 3-3 draw against Mexico on Monday, and also found the net scored in his side's opening win against Ecuador last week. Chile's next game is against Bolivia on Friday.
