Dyke tells Wilshere: You're paid enough to put up with crowd abuse

FA chairman Greg Dyke has told the Premier League’s top stars they are paid enough to put up with stick from rival supporters.

Arsenal star Jack Wilshere is facing an FA charge for making a one-fingered gesture at Manchester City’s fans during his side’s 6-3 defeat at the Etihad Stadium last weekend.

The England midfielder has accepted the charge, but will appeal the two game ban, claiming it is too severe for the offence he committed.

And while Dyke admits he feels for players when they are victims of crowd abuse, he insists they must learn to put up with it.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, he said: “As a supporter I sympathise with the players because of the flak they get from the crowd. People can lose their cool very quickly but he [Wilshere] has got to learn.

“He’s very well paid to play the game and he’s got to learn to cope with it.

“You think back over many years of players who were hot-headed when they were younger, but not when they get older. They just learn and mature. That’s what happens. It’s part of life.”
