n United: Red Devils fight back to seal quarter-final clash with Arsenal Read

Preston 1-3 Man United: Red Devils fight back to seal quarter-final clash with Arsenal

Manchester United were forced to battle back from a goal down to beat Preston North End 3-1 and seal a quarter-final clash with Premier League rivals Arsenal.
The dogged League One hosts frustrated the Red Devils throughout a cagey first-half in which the top flight side failed to land a shot on target.
Deepdale was in fine voice throughout the tie, the first meeting between the sides since 1972, and the famous stadium erupted when the Lillywhites took a surprise lead through Scott Laird’s deflected strike minutes into the second-half.
They were good value for their lead, with centre-back pairing Tom Clarke and Paul Huntington having the game of their lives with crucial blocks to deny the likes of Wayne Rooney and Marouane Fellaini.
But the home supporters were silenced when Ander Herrera drew United level with a neat swivelled finish in the box, and their dreams of progressing to the last eight were smashed when Fellaini volleyed in on 72 minutes and Rooney scored from the spot to complete the comeback.
There was nothing to separate the sides at the half-time break following a tightly contested opening 45 minutes.
Di Maria went close but failed to test goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann with a swerving shot, while Preston more than once had their dogged defence to thank, with superbly timed diving challenges from John Welsh and Bailey Wright twice denying Rooney a goal-scoring chance in the box.
Joe Garner was a big threat and it was he who first went close for the hosts, though he didn’t connect with his long-range effort at all well, as David de Gea easily gathered.
Fans had barely had enough time to return to their seats for the second-half before Preston then grabbed a shock lead, Laird seeing his low shot deflected off Antonio Valencia and under the diving De Gea before trickling in the back of the net.
Desperate for his side not to join the graveyard of Premier League sides knocked out by lower league position in this season’s competition, Louis van Gaal wasted little time in making a much-needed change.
On came Ashley Young, replacing the very quiet and ineffective Radamel Falcao, who surely must be running out of chances to prove himself for the Red Devils, and the England winger was instantly involved in the equaliser.
Feeding the ball from the right to find Herrera, the Spaniard exhibited master touch to control the ball and slot a neat finish in off the post
The hosts weren’t happy about the goal as they argued Rooney, in an offside position, had obstructed Stuckmann’s view, but referee Phil Dowd waved away their claims and the goal stood.
And United were soon in front with a second goal in seven minutes, Fellaini seeing his initial power header well saved by Stuckmann before firing in at an angle at the second attempt.
More controversy came Rooney’s way when he won a penalty after seeming to have been brought down in the area by Stuckmann, though replays showed the contact from the goalkeeper was minimal, if any at all.
Nevertheless, the skipper hammered in from the spot to seal their progression against the spirited Lillywhites, despite another largely unconvincing and disjointed performance from Van Gaal's men.

FA Cup, Arsenal will battle Man Utd

FA Cup quarter-final draw: Holders Arsenal to face Man United

Arsenal will continue their FA Cup defence in a quarter-final clash at Old Trafford after Manchester United beat Preston North End to seal their place in the last eight.
The draw took place shortly before Monday night's kick-off  at Deepdale, with the balls selected by England manager Sir Roy Hodgson and Brian Finney, son of the late, great Preston hero Sir Tom Finney.
They gave both sides on show a mouth-watering pre-match incentive, a chance to depose Arsene Wenger's Gunners, whose Wembley success over Hull last May was their first silverware in nine years.
Liverpool's hopes of reaching Wembley on the occasion of the departing Steven Gerrard's 35th birthday were also boosted as they were drawn to face Championship side Blackburn at Anfield.
Giant-killers Bradford, fresh from ousting top-flight opponents Sunderland and Chelsea, avoided Premier League opponents this time and will instead take on second-tier Reading at Valley Parade.
That pairing ensures at least one Football League side will make it to the final four of the competition, with the tie particularly significant for Bantams boss Phil Parkinson, who faces the club that call him a legend having made over 350 appearances over 11 years for the Royals.
Meanwhile, new Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has been handed a baptism of fire for his first cup clash in charge of the Villans, as they will meet derby rivals West Brom at Villa Park.

Liverpool v Blackburn
Bradford v Reading

West Ham boost as key duo set to return against Tottenham

West Ham are set to receive a double boost for the big London derby against Tottenham on Sunday with Winston Reid and James Collins making a return to first-team action.
The defensive duo have been forced to miss the last three games with hamstring problems and were badly missed as the Hammers crashed to a 4-0 defeat against West Brom in the FA Cup fifth round which ended their hopes of winning silverware this season.
But both Reid and Collins are set to resume training this week and could straight back into the starting line-up for the clash at White Hart Lane this weekend.
West Ham boss Sam Allardyce will be desperate to ease the crippling injury crisis which has affected the club in recent weeks and see his influential defenders back in the starting line-up.

Taking on Aston Villa job a no-brainer, says Sherwood

Taking on Aston Villa job a no-brainer, says Tim Sherwood

Tim Sherwood has described Aston Villa as a “giant footballclub” and claimed he had no hesitation in accepting their offer to replace Paul Lambert.
The 46-year-old was unveiled at Villa Park on Monday after signing a deal until 2018 to take charge of the Premier League strugglers.
Sherwood watched Villa beat Leicester 2-1 in the FA Cup on Sunday and went into the dressing room at half-time to deliver a team-talk with the score 0-0.
And, with Villa in the bottom three of the Premier League, Sherwood wants his side to play with freedom.
"To play with less fear," he said when asked what he said to the team at the break. "I thought it was a bit tentative. We had to get (Christian) Benteke more in the game. There's a little bit of apprehension around the place.
"They need to play with a bit more confidence then everything will be fine.
"It's a fantastic opportunity and a huge football club. When I got the call asking if I would be interested, it was a no-brainer. Yes. I'll take the job and then we'll negotiate later, see if they like what I'm about."
Sherwood, who will take charge for Saturday's visit of Stoke, is also looking to revitalise Benteke with the striker having scored just three goals this season.
"He probably needs a goal for his confidence," he said. "If he scores goals that will breed confidence and more will follow.
"It's not a one-man team. He needs to recapture the form that we all know because all the best clubs in the world were after him. He will need to be helped out by the rest of the squad. They need to step up to the plate."
The ex-Tottenham boss is yet to meet chairman Randy Lerner but did speak to the owner on the phone and insisted he is not looking beyond this season as Villa battle the drop.
"I spoke to him (Lerner) briefly but I spoke to (chief executive) Tom Fox at length about the vision of the club. I liked what I heard," he said.
"It's different this season to the long run because we're in a difficult situation right now. I need to get the best out of this group then we can look at it again."

Villa won just twice in their last 21 league games under Lambert, who was sacked on Wednesday following a 2-0 defeat to Hull.
After his final game Lambert insisted Villa had "13 cup finals" left and Sherwood agreed as they battle the drop.
"Everyone in football is surprised but they're here for a reason," he said.
"I need to get everyone on the training pitch and then take them at face value. I see it as a giant football club, one that is a great honour.
"Paul's right, it will be 13 cup finals. It's going to be very important that we win games."

Man United line-up v Preston North End: Academy star set for rare start?

Manchester United travel to Deepdale this evening to take on Preston North End in the fifth round of the FA Cup, bidding to avoid the biggest upset of the round so far.

Manchester United travel to Deepdale this evening to take on Preston North End in the fifth round of the FA Cup, bidding to avoid the biggest upset of the round so far, live on talkSPORT, from 7pm.
The FA Cup represents Louis van Gaal’s best chance of a trophy in his first season at Old Trafford, but question marks still hang over the Dutchman’s tactical approach.
Striker Robin van Persie is a doubt for the Red Devils, while Phil Jones is unlikely to play because of the knee injury suffered against Burnley in midweek.
Luke Shaw is available once again following his suspension, and Daley Blind should recover from the head injury sustained in the win over the Clarets.
Will academy star James Wilson come in for Van Persie and will there be a recall for Spaniard Ander Herrera? talkSPORT takes a look…
Possible Man United line-up against Preston:
Manchester United vs Leichester City - Barclays Premier League - 31st January 2015 - Football tactics and formations

Goalkeeper
Van Gaal could see this as the ideal fixture to give Victor Valdes his first competitive start at United, but David De Gea continues in goal in all games and will likely start between the sticks.
Defenders
Antonio Valencia was rested in midweek, and could take Paddy McNair’s place, while Shaw is back from suspension and will be keen to continue his progress and get back to the level he showed at Southampton.
Chris Smalling was United’s unlikely hero in midweek – scoring two goals – and he should partner Argentine Marcos Rojo, who has arguably been the Red Devils’ most consistent defender this season.
Midfield
The absence of Michael Carrick makes Blind integral to United, with his calmness and control on the ball.
Captain Wayne Rooney has looked a subdued figure in midfield, but van Gaal insists he will continue to play the Englishman there and his experience will be vital.
Angel Di Maria threatened some of his early season form against Burnley and should be given the license to roam forward, while Juan Mata’s cleverness should give him the nod against the League One outfit.
Attacking
Wilson came on and scored against Cambridge in the fourth round replay and started the matches at Yeovil and at the Abbey Stadium, and should start with van Persie a doubt.
Falcao continues to struggle and the Colombian will be keen to put in a solid performance to prove his critics wrong.

PSG ready to welcome 'very good' Chelsea ace to club

PSG captain Thiago Silva has claimed Eden Hazard would be a welcome addition in the French capital.
Chelsea's no.10 recently signed a new contract with the Premier League club, but has attracted interest from the super rich Ligue 1 side and ahead of the Blues' Champions League trip to Paris, Silva lavished praise on the 24-year-old.
“He is not just good, he is very good,” he told Nissan.
“If he really comes, he will be very welcome.”
Hazard joined Chelsea from Lille in 2012 in a £32m deal and it is the 24-year-old who has impressed Silva most in the Champions League so far, adding the playmaker, along with Brazil duo Oscar and Willian must be watched carefully.
“All [Chelsea's] players are very accomplished, but I believe the Brazilians always make the difference

PSG admission! 'We thought we'd beaten Chelsea'

Demba Ba scores for Chelsea against PSG

PSG defender Thiago Silva has revealed tough lessons have been learned from last season's crushing Champions League defeat to Chelsea.
With three minutes left, PSG were 3-2 ahead on aggregate following a 3-1 first leg win and the players even thought they had done enough to secure a place in the semi finals.
“One important thing to always remember is that until the referee stops, the match is not done yet,” Silva told Nissan.
“In the last match [against Chelsea] we thought our team was already qualified.”
However, a late Demba Ba goal doubled Chelsea's lead after Andre Schurrle's earlier opener, earning Jose Mourinho's side victory on away goals and a place in the last four at the French side's expense.

When he scores goals like this it's little wonder Chelsea want Guarin

Fredy Guarin is a wanted man according to his agent
According to his agent, Fredy Guarin is a wanted man, with Chelsea and Real Madrid named as just two of the teams to miss out on the Colombian over the past year.
In a recent interview Marcelo Ferreyra revealed that Inter Milan had rejected moves from the European duo for his client, although it will be increasingly hard for them to hold onto him when he scored goals like this.
In a 4-1 victory over Atalanta on Sunday, Guarin played a huge role, earning a penalty for his side and scoring twice – including this beauty – to ease the pressure on boss Roberto Mancini.
Guarin has been criticised in recent seasons as a player with bags of potential, but little in the way of a final product, but he looks like he may be finally blossoming into some player.

Blake tells Ings: Reject Real Sociedad for Liverpool or Tottenham move

Former Burnley hero Robbie Blake has told Danny Ings to reject a Real Sociedad switch in the summer - because a move to Liverpool or Tottenham would be better for his career.
Some reports suggest the ex-Bournemouth forward could QUADRUPLE his wages by moving to the continent in the summer, when his contract with the Lancashire side runs out.
But Spurs, Man United and Liverpool have also been linked with the England Under-21 striker and Blake, who won the Play Off final with the Clarets in 2009, believes staying in the Premier League would be better for his development.
“Danny Ings was on fire last season in the Championship and people were wondering whether he could do it in the Premier League,” he told Extra Time. “He’s proved that he is a top class player at this level and he scores all sorts of goals.
“It would be a shame if he did go to Real Sociedad in my opinion because it wouldn’t further his career.
“He needs to move on and go to a top team in the Premier League this summer, a club like Liverpool or Tottenham.”

Man United boss Van Gaal eyes creative midfielder in the summer

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has made a creative midfielder his top priority this summer

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has made a creative midfielder his top priority this summer.
The Dutchman has spent more than £150million on seven new players since he took charge of the Red Devils, but is still not happy with the squad at his disposal.
Angel di Maria, Daley Blind and Ander Herrera accounted for over two thirds of United's spending spree last year, but Van Gaal thinks he still lacks a dynamic midfielder to dictate play.
The lack of such a figure in the current United squad has led the Dutchman to deploy Wayne Rooney in midfield.
While Rooney is happy in midfield, according to Van Gaal, there is a feeling that the England captain is being placed there as a stop-gap until a more suitable candidate becomes available.
When asked whether he was playing Rooney there because he felt no-one else was capable of fulfilling that midfield role, Van Gaal said: "Of course that's the case. I'm looking for balance and I need it in midfield.
"The last games I played with Adnan Januzaj and Angel di Maria in the midfield positions. Then you need a certain balance for those kind of creative players.
"So when you have these creative players and you think that (Radamel) Falcao and Robin van Persie are also creative, then you have four creative players. Then you have to look for balance in your team."
When it was put to him that signing a creative midfielder should be top of his agenda this summer, Van Gaal agreed
"Yes, of course," the 63-year-old said.
Roma's Kevin Strootman fits the bill perfectly. The midfielder was a regular in Van Gaal's Holland team until he suffered a knee injury that ruled him out of the World Cup.
Strootman recently suffered another setback which will keep him out until the end of the season, but a summer move is not out of the question.
Paul Pogba, property of Serie A rivals Juventus, keeps being linked with his former club.
Rooney looks like he will have to spend some time in midfield from now until the end of the season.
There has been no hint of objection to that move from the 29-year-old himself, according to Van Gaal.
"He's happy. Otherwise he should come to me and say he's not happy and he never does," said Van Gaal, who takes his team to Preston in the FA Cup on Monday.
"He's always friendly to me. He wants to perform what I want so that's what I see."
Van Gaal admits the United skipper may still be yearning for a move back to his preferred role, though.
"Of course when the whole world is writing he has to be in the striker's position, he will be thinking 'maybe, hey'. He's human," the Dutchman added.

Arsenal boss Wenger: Cazorla a midfield ‘master’

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Santi Cazorlahas become a “master” in centre midfield.
The diminutive Spain international was captain for the Gunners’ 2-0 FA Cup win against Middlesbrough on Sunday, with Per Mertesacker dropped to the bench to hand January signing Gabriel Paulista his debut.
And Wenger hinted that Cazorla’s central role could be a more regular occurrence in the Arsenal side now that the former Villarreal midfielder reaches the latter stage of his career.
“He has become a master of central midfield,” said Wenger. “Today again his performance was top.
“I didn’t see that [defensive role] in him as much as a central player, but defensively he has improved a lot.
“You always have to be open-minded with players sometimes, he is 30 now, and it is a little bit more difficult on the flanks for him [but] showed he has other aspects of his game in the middle.”

WWE NXT TakeOver Rival results: Kevin Owens wipes out Sami Zayn as Finn Balor and Adrian Neville impress

Irish superstar Finn Balor will be new NXT champion Kevin Owens’ first title challenger after the Canadian brawler ploughed through Sami Zayn at NXT TakeOver: Rival last night.
Owens, 30, was awarded the championship just two months after he made his debut on the developmental brand following a salvo of powerbombs that left the ref with no option but to stop the main event bout.
"I’m overjoyed," Owens reflected after the match.
"I came here for the NXT title, I came here to make things better for my family… it is just such a great moment."
Balor, who overcame ‘Jumping Geordie’ Neville in a thrilling match to determine the number one contender to the championship, left fans stunned with an awesome display of grace and technical brilliance – but also demonstrated a willingness to contravene the code of in-ring conduct by making the opportunistic most of openings.
And although the 33-year-old shook hands with former champ Neville as the smoke cleared from their searing contest, the hints are there that Balor is willing to be slightly more than pragmatic as well as pre-eminent to thrive.
The Women’s championship also changed hands in the penultimate match of the evening as Sasha Banks stretched reigning titleholder Charlotte into surrender in a four way bout that also included Bayley and Becky Lynch.
Having snuck in an attempt to steal the pin from Bayley following a belly-to-belly suplex from the second turnbuckle, Banks cranked Ric Flair’s daughter with a brutal crossface before tying up her former BFF with the winning crucifix pin.
NXT TakeOver: Rival results in full from Florida:
Hideo Itami beat Tyler Breeze with a running knee
Baron Corbin knocked off Bull Dempsey
NXT tag champs Wesley Blake and Buddy Murphy retained their titles against the Lucha Dragons
Finn Balor finished off Adrian Neville with a double foot stomp from the top
Sasha Banks won the NXT Women's title from Charlotte in a Fatal Four Way that also included Becky Lynch and Bayley
Kevin Owens claimed the NXT championship after Sami Zayn was deemed unfit to continue
