Serie A - AC Milan agree deal to sign Chelsea's Essien

AC Milan have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Ghana midfielder Michael Essien who has travelled to Italy for a medical.

"...the completion of the move is subject to him (Essien) agreeing personal terms with Milan and passing a medical examination,"Chelsea said on their website.
Italian media reports said Essien was due to sign a contract that would keep him at Milan until June next year.
Essien joined Chelsea in 2005, during which time the west london club won the Champions League, the Premier League title twice and the FA Cup four times.
Earlier, Milan said on their website: "Just turned 31, and with a CV including domestic title and Champions League wins as well as victory with the Ghana national side, Michael Essien is expected in the city this evening".

FA Cup fourth round preview: Chelsea v Stoke preview

Chelsea, to, the, from, after

Demba Ba could be given his chance to lead the line for Chelsea against Stoke in the FA Cup fourth round tie at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
With Fernando Torres ruled out, Jose Mourinho may opt to rest hat-trick hero Samuel Eto'o.
With Juan Mata's impending move to Manchester United, Mohamed Salah is expected to sign before Sunday from Basel - but he will not be involved.
Asmir Begovic is in contention to play after recovering from a broken finger.
The Bosnia goalkeeper has returned to full training after damaging the digit on Christmas Day.
Striker Kenwyne Jones could be recalled after being dropped from the squad for the loss at Crystal Palace after his previous refusal to play against Liverpool.
John Guidetti, on loan from Manchester City, could feature to follow up on his debut from the bench at Crystal Palace.

Premier League - Paper Round: £300k-a-week deal for Rooney

Wayne Rooney is keen to sign a new mega-deal to stay at Manchester United; David Moyes could be set to land a Germany star; and the Arsene Wenger-Jose Mourinho spat is escalating - here are the main stories making headlines from today's newspapers.

Rooney to pen mega United contractWayne Rooney is ready to sign a new £300,000 deal to stay at Manchester United until 2018 and turn his back on ChelseaReal Madrid and Arsenal, reports today's Daily Telegraph. With the signing of Juan Mata close to being finalised, United are keen to wrap up a deal for the England striker and end the saga surrounding his future. Talks between the two parties have already taken place and Rooney has been encouraged by the club's willingness to hand him such a lucrative deal and their determination to resist all offers to sell him.
Paper Round's view: That's a whole lot of money to keep one player, but if that is indeed what the club are prepared to pay, it speaks volumes about how desperately David Moyes wants to hang on to him - and gives a clear indication that the manager has a plan in mind to accommodate both Rooney and Mata in the same side. On the flip side, it does seem rather unsavoury that a player who hankered after a move elsewhere so recently - amid concerns over the quality of the United team - will be rewarded so handsomely with said team doing even worse than when he originally wanted out. Yet, that is modern day football. Like it or lump it.

Moyes runs rule over Kroos: United manager Moyes was in Germany on Friday night to watch the match between Borussia Moenchengladbach and Bayern Munich, purportedly to check out January targets Patrick Herrmann and Mario Mandzukic. But The Times claims Moyes had his eye on another player too: Bayern's Toni Kroos. The underfire boss was escorted into Borussia Monchengladbach's stadium by Kroos' agent and the pair sat together during the game, after United were alerted to contract stand-off between the Germany midfielder and his club. The paper reports that Bayern would undoubtedly ask for at least £25 million for Kroos, but United are clearly happy to splash the cash in a bid to arrest their current slump.
Paper Round's view: Well, this is a turn-up for the books. And what a signing Kroos could turn out to be. Labelled 'the complete midfielder' he would offer an option in an area that is sorely in need of spicing up, especially with Michael Carrick currently out injured. And at the age of 24, Kroos would not just be a stop-gap solution, and could potentially form part of the spine of Moyes' team for years to come. An exciting link, although it's highly likely that Bayern will want to hang on to a player of his calibre - Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has already said as much - and may only be a matter of the German giants stumping up enough cash.
- - -
United bid for ShawManchester United have made a £22.5 million bid for Southampton’s teenage left-back Luke Shaw, according to the Daily Mirror. That figure tops Chelsea's offer of £21m and Moyes is hoping to open talks this weekend, the report claims, with the 18-year-old to be given the opportunity to start in the first team from the outset. That would spell the end of the road for Patrice Evra, who is in the final five months of his contract at Old Trafford.
Paper Round's view: This transfer would represent something of a double whammy for United - not only would one of the brightest prospects arrive at Old Trafford, but it would also mean Chelsea miss out, a bit like the transfer equivalent of a six-pointer. And if an extra £1.5m or so ensures that happens, then United should go ahead all guns blazing. This is, after all, a club in crisis and desperate times call for lots of spending.
- - -
Arsenal close on Draxler: Germany midfielder Julian Draxler is desperate to join Arsenal this month, reports the Daily Mirror, which claims that bosses at the Emirates have been given "major encouragement" that a deal for the £35m-rated Schalke midfielder could be done before the close of the transfer window. It is "understood" that Arsenal are having talks with the Bundesliga club, who will sell if the price is right.
Paper Round's view: Excited Arsenal fans reading this report this morning should also be aware that Arsene Wenger emphatically denied the speculation after the FA Cup clash with Coventry last night. The Gunners boss said: "That is an illusion. There is nothing happening, honestly no. We don't need to take players on the flanks - we have 17 players on the flanks." So there.
- - -
MLS offer Rio chance: Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror also reports that United defender Rio Ferdinand is being offered big-money moves to the MLS this summer. The 35-year-old's one-year contract is running down and with no new deal on the horizon the report claims "he appears to be on his way out of Old Trafford". Ferdinand has told friends he is ready to head to the States in the summer, while his other option would be to retire and take up a role as a pundit with BT Sport.
Paper Round's view: Ferdinand's ego would certainly be satisfied in the States, where he would understandably be a big deal for the MLS, and you can't help get the feeling that he would also enjoy life off the pitch across the Pond, given his interests away from football in television, film and music. LA would be a great fit. Certainly, his future at United appears over.
- - -
Mourinho has a go at Wenger: Following Arsene Wenger's accusation yesterday that Chelsea have bent the transfer rules in their favour, Jose Mourinho has hit back, most papers report. The Daily Star wins the prize for the best headline, after the Blues boss slammed Wenger for having another go at his club. The Portuguese also taunted Wenger by claiming the Gunners could have signed Juan Mata ahead of Manchester United. “Wenger complaining is normal, because we know that is what he does," is the pick of Mourinho's quotes.
Paper Round's view: The spat between these two is as entertaining as it is unbecoming of two of the most respected managers in the world game. Wenger's original rant was curious at best and bizarre at worst, and while Mourinho's retort was always going to come, prompted as it was by journalists at his Friday presser, the row is quickly descending into schoolyard territory. Great for neutrals to watch, not so great for Arsenal and Chelsea fans.

Liga - Barcelona reveal Neymar deal actually cost £71.5 million

The deal to sign Neymar cost Barcelona 86.2 million euros (£71.5 million), including payments to the forward and his family, the club said on Friday after the player's father revoked a confidentiality agreement.

The Brazil international's close-season move from Santos, which the Spanish club initially said was worth 57.1 million euros (£47.3 million), is being investigated by a court for possible misappropriation of funds following a complaint from a Barca member.

Sandro Rosell, who was named in the lawsuit but denies wrongdoing, stepped down as president on Thursday. He said he wanted to protect the club's image and alleged he and his family had been threatened.
Barca had been reluctant to reveal all the details of the deal, citing the confidentiality agreement, but after a board meeting on Friday, Rosell's successor Josep Bartomeu told a news conference Neymar's father had given them permission to go public.
Barca director Raul Sanllehi reiterated the transfer on its own had cost 57.1 million euros (£47.3 million) including 17.1 million euros (£14.1 million) to Santos and 40 million euros (£33.1 million) as a "compensation fee" paid to a company owned by Neymar's parents.
However, he also detailed other payments around the transfer such as a signing bonus of 10 million euros (£8.3 million) and various other fees paid to the family that took the total cost to 86.2 million (£71.4 million).
Barca are paying Neymar 8.8 million euros (£7.3 million) in wages per season for his five-year contract, said Sanllehi.
"Neymar's father waived the confidentiality agreement because he considers what has happened (to Rosell) to be unjust," Bartomeu said.
The player had received more lucrative offers from some of Barca's rivals but decided to move to the Catalan capital because he believed in the club's project and wanted to play alongside Argentina forward Lionel Messi, he added.
Bartomeu said he and the rest of the board, which has remained virtually unchanged after Rosell's exit, intended to see out their mandate until 2016 even if he or vice president Javier Faus are implicated in the lawsuit.
They also intend to stand for re-election for a further term.
The plan to remodel the club's Nou Camp stadium, with construction due to start in 2017, was one of their main priorities, added Bartomeu.

Premier League - Manchester United agree deal to sign Juan Mata

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho had confirmed on Friday that Juan Matawill have a medical at Manchester United ahead of a move to the Premier League champions, and the Red Devils have now confirmed that they have finalised a deal which will go ahead pending a medical and agreement on personal terms.
United also confirmed that the deal is for a "club record fee", thought to be £37 million.
Since joining from Valencia for £23.5 million in August 2011 Mata has twice been voted Player of the Year at Stamford Bridge but slipped below Eden Hazard, Willian and Oscar in the midfield pecking order this season.
Chelsea being prepared to sell Mata, twice their Player of the Season and a huge fans' favourite, to rivals United has raised eyebrows and even led Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to suggest Chelsea are "playing" with the transfer window.
Wenger's point was that Chelsea have already played United twice this season so will not have to face Mata in a red shirt.
Predictably, Mourinho dismissed Wenger's claims and launched an attack against what he thinks is Arsenal's preferential treatment in the fixture list.
"Wenger complaining is normal because that's what he does all the time," Mourinho said.
"But when a player plays for a club on August 20 and two weeks later plays against them with a different shirt this is normal because this is the market, we don't make the rules.
"If Wenger sold Mesut Ozil to Manchester United in this moment I would be very happy because he is selling a very important player. He should be very happy that Chelsea sell a player like Juan Mata but I think this is his nature."
Several sources reported on Friday that the Mata deal would be delayed by Chelsea's signing of Mohamed Salah, who is seemingly being brought in to provide cover, with that deal being held up in turn by the need for a medical, personal terms and a work permit for the Egyptian.
That process is expected to take several days, though there are no obvious reasons why it should not go ahead, and United will expect to complete a deal for the Spanish playmaker imminently.
"It is a good offer. Respectful to us, respectful to the value of the player. That allows to try to bring another players because we need another player," Mourinho told a news conference. "Sooner rather than later things will be finalised.
"I asked him when the offer comes are you really happy to go and he was saying yes I am really happy to go. After that we could feel mixed emotions.
"We are happy he goes to fantastic situation but we are all sad as well and some of him was a bit the same."
"No one is jumping about because Juan is leaving. We all like him a lot and we can't say you can only go if you go to Russia, to China, to France or Portugal.
"I don't know if Chelsea supporters globally would be happy with that because we are an open club.
"It's a good move for Juan, it's good for the Premier League and the offer was right. We hope Juan does well. We are convinced he will do well. No fears for us."
Mourinho said he was confident the deal to sign Basel's Egyptian playmaker Salah would be finalised but said the club would not be buying another striker in the transfer window despite Fernando Torres being injured.
He also said Ghana midfielder Michael Essien "could go or stay" in January.
"Essien is at this moment in a position where he can stay or go. If he stays fantastic. He is a fantastic club man, team player, so if he stays it's fantastic.
"But if a great situation arrives for him, for his future, in relation to him going to the World Cup, or a few more years contract at a high level, we must show him the respect."

Frimpong set for Arsenal exit

Arsenal, the, to, and, is

Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong is expected to secure a move away from the Emirates in this transfer window, according to reports.
Several Premier League and Championship clubs, and some foreign sides, are thought to have made enquiries about signing the Ghana international.
Frimpong is out of contract at the end of the season and Arsenal are thought to be willing to let him move on as he is well down the pecking order in Arsene Wenger's plans.
The 22-year-old has not featured for Arsenal this season and he is thought to be keen to move on in search of regular first-team football.
Frimpong, who has come through the ranks at Arsenal, has had loan spells at Fulham, Charlton and Wolves in the last two years, and he is now ready to kick-start his career with a permanent move away from the Emirates.

FA Cup: Arsenal beat Coventry 4-0 to progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup

Arsenal, the, a, of, from

Lukas Podolski notched a first-half brace as Arsenal beat Coventry 4-0 to progress into the fifth round of the FA Cup.
The German forward put the hosts ahead in the 15th minute from a Mesut Ozil pass and doubled the advantage 12 minutes later after fellow compatriot Per Mertesacker headed on a corner.
Coventry improved vastly after the break and Leon Clarke hit the post but Arsenal substitute Olivier Giroud made sure of the win by adding a third with six minutes remaining after a Kieran Gibbs pull back.
Fellow substitute Santi Carzorla put gloss on the result from close range with a minute remaining after Joe Murphy could only parry a shot into his path.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had named a strong starting XI, which included club-record signing Mesut Ozil.
Wenger, who also handed a senior debut to 16-year-old midfield prospect Gedion Zelalem - not even born when he first took charge at Highbury - will now regroup his squad for the Premier League trip to Southampton on Tuesday having cruised through without really getting out of second gear.

Intentions

Arsenal showed their intentions from kick-off, as Jack Wilshere and Podolski both went close before the Gunners swept into the lead on 15 minutes when the German forward rounded the goalkeeper to score from a tight angle.
Coventry captain Carl Baker forced a good save from Arsenal number two Lukasz Fabianski before Podolski headed in a second at the far post from a corner.
The 5,000 Sky Blues fans held up banners protesting against their move of 'home' matches down to Northampton before a part floodlight failure saw supporters across the Emirates Stadium use their smart phones as torches.
Coventry forward Clarke - who has handed in a transfer request - was put clear into the Arsenal penalty area at the start of the second half, but his shot at the near post was saved by the feet of Fabianski and he then fired against the post having been set up 18 yards out.
There was a brief stoppage when a Coventry fan came on to the pitch, wearing a T-shirt which read "Sisu Out" in protest against the club's owners.
The tempo of the match dropped during the closing stages, which saw main striker Giroud net his 13th goal of the season from close range before Cazorla - whose double sank Fulham last weekend - crashed in a fourth.

Bundesliga: Franz Beckenbauer admits Mario Mandzukic could leave the club in the summer

Arsenal, in, the, could, has

Bayern Munich's honorary president Franz Beckenbauer has admitted that Mario Mandzukic could leave the club this summer.
Mandzukic has been subject to rumours linking him to Arsenal, and with Robert Lewandowski set to join Bayern in the summer, the Croat's position could be under threat.
The 27-year-old has scored an impressive 12 goals in 20 appearances for the Bavarians, who are currently seven points clear in the Bundesliga with one game in hand over nearest rivals Bayer Leverkusen.
Beckenbauer told German sports magazine 11freunde: "Mandzukic could pack his bags. I see Lewandowski in the attack, his playing style is suited for (Pep) Guardiola's ideas than that of Manduzkic.
"There are even more reasons why he could leave - even without him, Guardiola could still count on Thomas Mueller and Mario Goetze in attack."

Tim Howard has backed Manchester United to finish the season strongly

Everton, the, to, a, and

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard is in no doubt that Manchester United will finish the season strongly and challenge the teams above them in the Premier League.
United lie seventh in the table, six points behind Liverpool, who currently occupy fourth position and a Champions League spot.
But Howard, who spent four years at Old Trafford after signing for the club as a direct replacement for Fabien Barthez in 2003, expects United to bounce back before the end of the season.
"I have no doubt they're going to be right in the thick of it," said Howard.
"I have a feeling what we think now is not going to be the case come May 11 because they're obviously the reigning champions and they still have a lot to prove to everyone.
"I still expect them to come good and push us and push the teams right in the hunt so we'll see what happens. Hopefully we can keep them down there but I think they'll have a lot to say about it."
Howard believes David Moyes was always going to find Sir Alex Ferguson a difficult act to follow but insists United's players must take greater responsibility for the way the team have performed this season.
"I think this season was always going to be one where everyone had an eye on them," Howard said. "Sir Alex Ferguson steps down so there was always going to be a lot of scrutiny on Manchester United.
"David Moyes has been under a lot of criticism and one thing I'll say is he's never kicked a ball for Manchester United.
"As players you have to stand up and be counted. It's a very easy thing to talk about the manager and unfortunately that's the pressure of being the manager.
"But you know what he's never kicked a ball for Manchester United and those players who are playing won the title last year so they're a damn good team."

Chelsea working to FFP - Wenger

Arsenal, the, to, a, is

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Juan Mata's impending sale to Manchester United is a sign that Financial Fair Play is working.
Chelsea have sanctioned the mid-season sale of Mata - the club's player of the year in each of the past two years - despite the fact the deal will significantly strengthen a Premier League rival.
The Spain midfielder cannot face Chelsea this season - Jose Mourinho's side have played United twice already - but could yet affect the results of the club's title rivals.
Wenger takes issue with the rules which allow such unevenness but believes the deal is less down to astute timing and more do to with balancing the books to stay in line with UEFA rules.
"I think it is a purely financial reason," he said. "That is the first time I come to that conclusion with Chelsea.
"It means somewhere that Chelsea changes philosophy and they want to get on line with financial fair play. For me that is the main reason, and that is a good thing.
"We didn't need the rules of financial fair play to be dictated to us because we imposed it on ourselves, like what should be the case for everybody.
"It is difficult because you fight with a gun against people with a tank. Today, everybody now fights on more even ground.
"Chelsea sold Mata because they had plenty of players who are very young - Eden Hazard, Oscar, Ramires, David Luiz, they are young. They are not in a big need to buy.
"They had a surplus with Mata, so they sold him to Manchester United - yes it is a surprise, but they got a good price."
Kevin de Bruyne has also left Stamford Bridge this month, while Mohamed Salah and Nemanja Matic have come in.

Barcelona president Rosell confirms resignation

Sandro Rosell and the Neymar issue has been a major talking point

Sandro Rosell is resigning as Barcelona's president, a day after a judge agreed to hear a lawsuit accusing him of allegedly hiding the cost to acquire Neymar.
Rosell said current vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu will take the top role at the Camp Nou through 2016, by agreement of the board of directors.
"I am resigning irrevocably," Rosell told reporters.
Barca and Rosell have so far always maintained that they paid "just" €57 million to sign Neymar from Santos in the summer, while others suggest the deal was for as much as €95m and the player and his family have received €51m in various fees and commissions.
The issue became increasingly serious this week after it was confirmed that a Madrid court had accepted a petition from Barca socio Jordi Cases to look into the transfer, launching a formal investigation amid claims that different versions of the contracts involved exist.
"I have always said that the signing of Neymar is correct and has sparked jealousy," Rosell said on Thursday. "This board [of directors] is a team and this team leads a project that has been successful. My stage is over and I am presenting my resignation to the board. Bartomeu will be in charge of the presidency as the board has voted unanimously. I wish him the best and I ask you to support him."
Bartomeu told the media he will hold a news conference on Friday to reveal details about the future and added: "We are going to be very firm in the defence and demand the utmost respect for our club."
There is no suggestion that any Barcelona executive personally benefited from the complex Neymar deal, but Rosell and other club executives could potentially be called to testify in a Madrid court, and tax authorities in Spain and Brazil are likely to be following the proceedings closely.
Rosell was elected president by the club members in 2010 after Joan Laporta served two consecutive terms. He was expected to run for reelection in 2016. The last president to resign from Barcelona was Joan Gaspart in 2003.

Premier League - Paper Round: Terry resigned to leaving Chelsea

John Terry is set to leave Chelsea this summer; Manchester United need more midfield cover; and nutter Pablo Osvaldo is on his way out of Southampton - here are the main stories making headlines in this morning's papers.

Terry's Chelsea days are numbered: The Daily Mirror's back page today informs us that John Terry will leave Chelsea at the end of the season. The Blues captain, who is yet to be offered a extension to his contract which expires in the summer, is "being eased towards the exit door", the paper claims. The club have given only vague indications they are willing to discuss new terms in the next few months, and the paper reports that their plan is to offer Terry only a one-year deal - and attempt to slash his current wages. "Sources close to Terry" say he is now becoming resigned to leaving the club he has been with his entire career.
Paper Round's view: Terry, 33, is unlikely to be offered anything over a one-year deal by Chelsea, assuming he's offered anything at all, and that could well be too little for a man who wants one final big deal. Interest has already been pricked in Turkey with Galatasaray willing to table something a bit more substantial, and if that's what Terry wants, then a summer move is definitely on the cards. Of course, he may prove his loyalty to his beloved club and accept whatever terms they are offering, but you shouldn't bet your house that will happen.
- - -
Carrick injury means more business to come for UnitedMichael Carrick's injury lay-off could prompt Manchester United to bring in another midfielder during this transfer window, reports The Times. Carrick has been ruled out for up to a month with an ankle problem and the report claims that David Moyes has stepped up his efforts to recruit a midfielder before the closing of the window next Friday. Ilkay Gundogan, of Borussia Dortmund, Paul Pogba and Arturo Vidal, both at Juventus,William Carvalho, of Sporting Lisbon, and Marek Hamsik, the Napoli midfielder, had all previously been ruled out as unattainable, but Moyes is now rethinking his strategy in a bid to add to the signing of Juan Mata. The report adds that Fredy Guarín, Inter Milan’s Colombia midfielder, may be a more realistic target, with a swap deal involving Javier Hernandez a possibility.
Paper Round's view: Even before the injury the Carrick, United desperately needed to reinforce their midfield, so perhaps the England international's unfortunate injury will prove to be a blessing in disguise, should the club bring in a player up to the job of replacing him short-term - and into the future. What United need to do now though is something they spectacularly failed to do last summer - act quickly. If they can, perhaps their season won't prove quite so disastrous.
- - -
Moyes gets backing from owners: Despite United's woes so far this season, the club's owners are backing Moyes and the manager's future is not in doubt, according to both the Daily Star and the Daily Mirror. The Star reports that while the Glazers are "less than impressed" with developments this season and are struggling to come to terms with the lack of success, Moyes's position is not even on the boardroom agenda. A well placed club source told the Star: “The future of the manager is not even worthy of a debate.”
Paper Round's view: At least somebody's thinking straight, with the Star's report claiming that Moyes will be judged by the club's hierarchy on what happens during the close season and how the team performs after that. If that's true, then sense has finally prevailed in football - not such a common occurrence these days. Moyes was always going to need time to get into the job, and that's what he should be given, not just six months at the helm. What many people are overlooking too is that his players have let him down on numerous occasions this season, not least during the Capital One Cup semi-final against Sunderland. With signings such as Mata and possibly one or two more, either in January or the summer, Moyes and his team will be in a far better position to be judged, but not before.
- - -
Wenger accuses Chelsea: Arsene Wenger has gone on the attack over what he believes to be the bending of transfer rules by Chelsea to gain an advantage in the Premier League, reports the Daily Telegraph. The Arsenal manager has accused Chelsea of "playing" with regulations and claimed the timing of the Blues sale of Mata to United is designed specifically to help Jose Mourinho’s team, given that Mata will be free to face Chelsea's title rivals, including the Gunners, Manchester City andLiverpool. Chelsea have already played United twice this season.
Paper Round's view: It's difficult to sympathise with Wenger's view of this - it requires a huge leap of faith to believe that Chelsea's sale of Mata to United, or the loan of Romelu Lukaku to Everton for that matter, was conducted with the aim of weakening title rivals. Still, with Machiavellian manager Jose Mourinho in charge at Stamford Bridge, anything's possible.
- - -
Osvaldo transfer-listed: Dani Osvaldo's training ground headbutt on team-mate Jose Fonte has prompted Southampton to put him on the transfer list, reports the Daily Mirror. One source said there was “blood everywhere” as other members of the squad piled in to separate the pair. The Italian striker was immediately suspended after the amazing bust-up and now the paper claims that Saints are desperate to off-load their bad-boy record signing. Inter Milan and Fiorentina could be interested.
Paper Round's view: If you headbutt someone on the training ground, you can't really expect to remain at the club, it's as simple as that. The shame is that Osvaldo is a decent player, albeit a clearly combustible one, and the club will be worse off without him on the pitch. Even more regretful is that the incident pretty much encapsulates Saints' recent implosion.

Talking Tactics: Who is the perfect No 10?

When it comes to fabled 'No 10s' lighting up the Barclays Premier League, we have been spoilt for choice down the years, with genius playmakers such as Dennis Bergkamp, Gianfranco Zola and Eric Cantona operating behind a lone striker and setting the bar incredibly high.
This week Adrian Clarke takes a closer look at the new breed of these playmakers, and asks what goes into the make-up of a natural footballing architect…

Mesut Ozil – Smooth and clinical

Costing Arsenal a club-record fee last summer, some have argued that Mesut Ozil should have contributed more than four Barclays Premier League goals and seven assists since his arrival at Emirates Stadium, but I believe that’s harsh.
The 25-year-old fits seamlessly into the Arsenal side and the way in which he effortlessly aids their transition from defence to attack should not be underestimated. Gliding around the opposition half, always making an angle for a team-mate, Ozil is the go-to guy whenever Arsene Wenger's men look to spring an attack. Passing rival teams into submission, he persistently makes other players chase the ball.
Unlike a lot of "natural" No 10s Ozil does not often take up positions directly behind the striker. Instead, he will glide from side to side between the lines and probe from the wide areas, favouring the right, as shown in Image 1.
Although a good dribbler, and someone who enjoys carrying the ball, the Germany international's strength is to link play with simple passes to others – performing a fairly unselfish team role. As displayed in Table 1 below, he will still create three chances a game on average, in spite of this willingness to be uncomplicated.
Once inside the penalty area there are few players in the division who boast a greater shooting accuracy. Missing the target just three times all season, there is no one else Arsenal would prefer a chance to fall to other than their record buy. In fact he has the second-best shooting accuracy in the Barclays Premier League, just behind Christian Eriksen, of Tottenham Hotspur.
With such a phenomenal end product, if Ozil can push himself to get into goalscoring and assist-making positions more often, he is sure to score and make a hatful.

Wayne Rooney – All-action second striker

The Manchester United forward has so many attributes that he could play virtually anywhere on the pitch. But it is as a support striker where arguably he most excels.
Of the four players featured here, Rooney is the only natural forward and that is reflected in his impressive output in and around the final third. With more assists than anyone else this season, and nine goals to his name, too, the England forward is the kind of playmaker who bases his game around making a difference to the goal tally.

Unlike a lot of other gifted No 10s, it is impossible to limit Rooney’s work to inside the danger zone. Instead of concentrating all his efforts on play in the opponents’ half, as with Ozil, he will roam around the pitch (as seen in Image 2), getting involved in plenty of defensive work, making tackles, interceptions and clearances for his team.
It is his ability as a forward that matters most, though. This season David Moyes' midfield have scored seven goals between them and this is why using a goalscorer such as Rooney behind his centre-forward is so vital to United's cause. Within the current set-up, they need their No 10 to score plenty.

Oscar – Intelligence and industry

It is little wonder Jose Mourinho loves Oscar. Having a player with the ability to hurt opponents, who is also happy to run tirelessly to win the ball back for the team, is a manager’s dream.
The Brazilian is the best attacking midfielder in the country at harassing defenders and defensive midfielders in possession, scampering around as if his life depends on it, pressuring their every move.
Selecting someone who is willing to put in this kind of work-rate, covering the left, right and centre, allows Chelsea, a team who defend deep, to press higher up the pitch and win the ball back in good areas. (See Image 3 for a good example)
Without Oscar, or a player of his ilk, the Blues would spend large swathes of each match sitting back and absorbing pressure in their own half. Equally, if this happens, Oscar is still the kind of No 10 who is content to track back towards the edge of his own box and clear the danger.

Flanked by two athletic players who like to run with the ball, in Eden Hazard and Willian, Oscar is also an ideal foil in the attacking midfield trio at Chelsea. He may lack the incisive craft of Juan Mata, but he has pace, a keen eye for goal (scoring six from 31 attempts this term) and links play quickly and efficiently, with an 83% passing success rate. This suits the way Mourinho wants to attack.
Like Ozil at Arsenal, Oscar is the perfect No 10 to suit their system.

Ross Barkley – Youthful dynamism

Fresh out of the Under-21s, the Everton academy graduate has been a revelation "in the hole" for Roberto Martinez this season.
Unlike the other three players featured, Barkley is arguably more of a natural box-to-box midfielder who has been given licence to play further forward, and because he is young, quick and fearless it is a position that has helped him catch the eye this term.
Against Liverpool at home (see Image 4) and Arsenal away, the 20-year-old was outstanding, darting into holes to escape the attention of his respective markers, Lucas and Mikel Arteta, who both struggled to cope with the dynamism of his movement.
In most aspects statistically, Barkley is not at the same consistent level as Ozil, Rooney and Oscar, but he does have the greatest scope for improvement, especially as he develops his own style in the role.
Where he stands out most, is with his direct positivity in possession. Barkley commits defenders by running at them and getting plenty of shots on goal, 36 so far this term. In an Everton side with two deeper-lying midfielders and wide men who like to come inside and play, it is important for Martinez to have someone like Barkley to provide a threat bursting down the centre.
He is another example of how No 10s can be diverse in approach.

Final thought

Natural No 10s can come in all shapes and sizes. It is how the individuals fit into their respective teams that matters most. As can be seen from the data, different players shine in varying ways, even when they are effectively occupying the same position.
In footballing terms, Lionel Messi is possibly the ultimate No 10 who does everything brilliantly, but these four Barclays Premier League stars are each fantastic in their own way.
