Yaya Toure sits out practice with Ivory Coast

 OOJ - Yaya Toure
Yaya Toure sat out practice on Saturday, three days before the Ivory Coast plays its opening match at the African Cup of Nations.
The four-time African player of the year stretched on the side as his teammates practiced at a small stadium in Malabo.
The Ivory Coast opens play in Group D on Tuesday against Guinea at Estadio de Malabo. Mali will face Cameroon later that night.
Toure, who plays for Manchester City, is a key player for both his country and his Premier League club. He won his record-equaling fourth African player of the year award this year, putting him level with Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o.

ARSENAL BOSS WENGER SLAMS BALLON D'OR. I NEVER

as_wenger3

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits he's no fan of the Ballon d'Or.
Wenger slammed the annual award, which was won by Cristiano Ronaldofor a third time earlier this week, believing that the best teams should be credited and not the best individuals.
"I'm a team fan," when asked about the Ballon d'Or.
"I am totally against the Ballon d'Or, I am a team-lover. I would not vote for anyone, I am completely against it."

LIVERPOOL REVIVE LONG-TERM PUSH FOR SEVILLA STR

as_rodgers1

Liverpool are weighing up a move for Sevilla striker Kevin Gameiro.
The Daily Star says summer signings Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotellihave struggled to find the back of the net and reports in Spain suggest boss Brendan Rodgers has his eye on 27-year-old Gameiro.
Liverpool were linked with a move for the French forward in 2013 but he opted to join Sevilla from Paris Saint-Germain in a £7m deal.
Gameiro struck 15 times in La Liga for Los Rojiblancos in his maiden season but he has been limited to just ten appearances this campaign with Colombian star Carlos Bacca favoured by Unai Emery.

Mauro Icardi On Chelsea's Watch List

as_mourinho2
Chelsea are tracking Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi.
The Daily Star says the Argentine striker has been linked with a £32m switch to Liverpool but sources on the continent suggest Chelsea are in pole position to sign him.
Roberto Mancini's side are struggling in ninth place in the Serie A table and sporting director Marco Fassone admits the club's spending plans for next season depend on Champions League football returning to the San Siro.
He is quoted by Fichajes as saying: "In January there are no plans to sacrifice players, but at the end of the season can occur.
"We have already planned spending for next summer. No Champions League, some outputs may be unavoidable."

Fabregas: MAN-MARKING NO PROBLEM FOR ME

as_fabregas1

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has no problem with the man-marking of opposition teams.
The 27-year-old has already provided 14 assists in the Premier League since signing from Barcelona for £30million in the summer.
He is aware that teams are starting to put a player on him to stop him from making an impact.
However, the Spain midfielder said: “I’m used to it and take it as a compliment. But it’s a challenge as well, which I have to try and cope with.
“It all depends if the other team are pressing high or if they are dropping off but sometimes it is really unexpected for me.
“The day we played Liverpool [Chelsea won 2-1 in November], I didn’t expect someone to be behind me the whole game and it was Jordan Henderson, who actually did the same thing with me when he was at Sunderland and I was at Arsenal.”

Mourinho : MAN CITY LIVE WITHIN DIFFERENT FINANCIAL FAIR PLAY RULES TO OTHER CLUBS

as_mourinho2
Manchester City accepted sanctions at the end of last season for breaching the UEFA Financial Fair Play rules, among them a fine and restrictions on the club's Champions League squad.
However, that has not stopped them from this week spending £28million to sign Wilfried Bony from Swansea.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho congratulated his title rivals for their acquisition, then queried the validity of FFP.
"Well done, well done - good player, good striker, if they have the money and can spend it and have no problems with Financial Fair Play, well done," he said.
"I think they can only play with 11, unless the rules for them are different and they can play with 12.
"It looks like the rules are different for them in certain aspects, but not this one. If Bony plays and Dzeko is on the bench, I am happy with that.
"Fantastic squad, one more top player for that squad to have Aguero, Jovetic, Dzeko and Bony is absolutely magnificent. I repeat, well done."
Asked what other aspects are different for them, Mourinho retorted: "You know what I mean."

VAN GAAL ON WHAT FALCAO HAS TO DO FOR PERMANENT MAN UTD MOVE

as_falcao_col
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says striker Radamel Falcao still needs to justify his place at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal said: "If a player costs £95m or £5,000, it doesn't make any difference. You have to prove yourself."
The Colombia international was left out of United's squad for their 1-0 home loss to Southampton last Sunday.
United have an option to activate a £40m buy-out clause for the striker, who earns £265,000 a week.
The Dutchman added: "He has to prove himself, that we have agreed. We have made this deal and everything is clear and it is not the end of the year [the duration of his loan spell] so he has the chance for that.
"For the manager it is the quality of the training sessions, the quality in his performances and matches and he has to compare [favourably].
"A player of £95m has to prove himself also. Maybe he has less motivation so I have to be like that."

REID COULD ARSENAL'S DEFENCE WOES

as_reid
Former agent Barry Silkman believes Winston Reid would be a good signing for Arsenal.
The West Ham United defender, off contract in June, is being linked with the Gunners.
Silkman told talkSPORT: “His best position is as a central defender. When he played for New Zealand he played right of the three centre halves so half like a right back and half as a centre half.
“The qualities that he hasn’t got is to get forward and join in with the play, which in modern day football, your full backs have to get forward.
“He’s an excellent defender, he’s an excellent blocker of shots, but he is not a player who will come out of the back and play.
“Arsenal have to start getting defenders who defend. It’s all well having defenders who can pass the ball but they have to be able to defend.”

REVEALED: MAN UTD TABLE MASSIVE BID FOR BAYERN MUNICH ATTACKER MULLER

as_muller
Manchester United have tabled a massive bid for Bayern Munich attacker Thomas Muller.
The Daily Star says Muller, 25, has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent months, and it's believed Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is keen to lure the German international, who he managed during his two-year spell Bayern boss, to Old Trafford
But according to reports, the Dutchman has had an approach for the forward knocked back by the German giants.
Sources in Germany claim Van Gaal has had a £45m bid for the prolific striker, who has attracted interest from Arsenal and Liverpool, rejected.
Bayern boss Pep Guardiola is expected to reject any more approaches United make for the German international, who has three-and-a-half years left on his current contract with the Bundesliga champions.

Livepool In For Napoli Striker

as_higuain

Gonzalo Higuain remains committed to Napoli.
Higuain's brother and agent has responded to the latest round of rumours surrounding the striker.
“Do Liverpool want Higuain?” Nicolas Higuain considered.
“I don’t speak English, just Italian, French and Spanish.
“I haven’t spoken to any club, firstly because they haven’t called me and secondly because it would be disrespectful to Napoli, it wouldn’t be fair.
“[Napoli President Aurelio] De Laurentiis is a great person, a man of honour and I couldn’t behave incorrectly. We’re not thinking about leaving Napoli.
“I’m confident that the team can make third place [and qualify for the Champions League], then we’ll see about Gonzalo’s future.
“I haven’t spoken with any team, Gonzalo is calm, he has a contract with Napoli and he’s not planning to leave because he’s happy. We have to fight for third place.”

Torres Dazzle in Madrid Derby

as_torres2
Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres was thrilled with his brace in their Copa del Rey draw against Real Madrid.
The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker scored his first two goals since rejoining his boyhood club as Atleti claimed a 2-2 draw at the Bernabeu to reach the last eight of the competition with of a 4-2 aggregate score.
"It's been a wonderful day, a day for celebrations," said Torres.
As for the cup tie itself, Torres had this to say: "We're happy. We had to stay focused and not give them any chances. The early goal enabled us to play our game. I don't think we were under too much pressure. The result was never in doubt and that's not easy at the Bernabéu."
When asked if he feared a comeback, he admitted: "This is the Bernabéu and even though you score a goal they can score four. We held on to the draw until half-time and then we managed to get another."

CHELSEA BOSS MOURINHO NAMED MANAGER O

as_mourinho2
At a ceremony in Casino do Estoril on the outskirts of Lisbon on Wednesday night to celebrate 100 years of Portuguese football, Chelseaboss Jose Mourinho was honoured as manager of the century.
“Obviously the titles that I won with Porto in this context are the most important in my career because they were titles won with a Portuguese team for Portuguese soccer.
He added: ‘It represents a sensation of not only have reached so many goals in my career but also in some way have contributed to Portuguese soccer.
'I have not been here for 12 years, 12 years away, but even in being away I have always tried to dignify my country and Portuguese soccer.

AWESOME! MAN UTD STAR BLIND ANSWERS ALL FAN MAIL PERSONALL

as_blind1
Manchester United midfielder Daley Blind is bucking the trend of Premier League footballers by answering his fan mail himself!
The Dutchman, 24, gets dozens of letters a week from across the globe. And he reads each one and replies with a signed photo in a hand-written envelope.
A source told the Mirror: "Daley takes his responsibility to fans very seriously.
“Some players don’t get round to taking their letters home or ask someone in the office to reply to a few.
“But Daley reads the lot. That’s brilliant and shows how humble he is.
“Reading letters from fans keeps the players honest.”
The footballer recently posted a snap of his fan mail on Facebook and wrote: “Got some really nice letters from all over the world.”

VAN GAAL PLANS TO DUMP MAN UTD DEFENDERS

as_rafael
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal plans to clearout FOUR senior defenders in the next stage of his rebuilding plans.
The Daily Star says Van Gaal is preparing to axe four mainstays of the United defence.
Reports suggest the Dutchman will allow the British trio of Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones to leave the club, along with the Brazilian right-back Rafael.
Van Gaal is understood to be unhappy with the way the quartet have adapted to his coaching methods and tactical plans.
Rafael was reportedly told he had no future at the club over the summer.
Smalling, Evans and Jones are all out of contract in the summer of 2016, and reports from Manchester suggest they are likely to be sold in either this window or next, with the club eager not to lose them for nothing, but also unwilling to offer them new contracts.

MLS DUO OFFER TO TAKEOVER REAL MADRID LOAN FOR MAN UTD STRIKER CHICHARITO

as_chicharito_mex
Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez has fielded several MLS offers this month.
The Mexico international is currently on a season-long loan with Real Madrid, which are unlikely to take up the option to sign him permanently in June.
Marca says Chicago Fire and Los Angeles Galaxy came forward with offers to take Chicharito on-loan to MLS for the new 2015 season. United were prepared to see the move happen, but Hernandez rejected both proposals.
Despite Real's current stand, Chicharito is determined to see out the season in Madrid and hasn't given up hope of earning a permanent deal.
A return to United is now a non-starter, where United boss Louis van Gaal is satisfied with his current striker options.

Paper Round: Arsenal to swoop for Dortmund duo

Arsenal to make a January raid for Ilkay Gundogan and Mats Hummels; Manchester United open talks for £30m Marquinhos; and Manchester City in crazy £480m Messi link – all the latest from today’s papers.

.
Arsene Wenger gehen die Innenverteidiger aus.
Arsenal launch raid on Dortmund pair Hummels and Gundogan: Arsene Wenger will attempt to twist a knife into the heart of Manchester United fans when he attempts to poach long-term Old Trafford targets Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan. That’s according to the Daily Star who report: “Hummels is edging closer to an exit from the German giants after refusing to commit his future to the club. The World Cup-winning defender has also revealed he's had offers to leave Dortmund.” The daily also links Arsenal to a move for Gundogan, sourcing The Telegraph by saying, “The Gunners are hopeful of tying up a deal for the £20m midfielder and are arranging talks.” With Hummels said to have a £35 million asking price, this could end up being an incredible £55 million double raid.
Paper Round’s view: Arsenal’s defensive frailties have been well documented this season and signing Hummels would certainly go a long way to addressing those, with Wenger’s side in dire need of quality in the centre of defence. The signing of Gundogan makes slightly less sense given his recent injury woes and their wealth of talent in the midfield area.

City open to bank-busting move for Messi: Manuel Pellegrini “has opened the door to a bank-busting Manchester City move for Lionel Messi” according to the sensational story on the back page of Thursday’s Sun. This comes just a day after City completed a £28 million deal to sign Wilfried Bony from Swansea, the tabloid adding, “The Argentine maestro would expect a six-year deal worth around £270m, taking any switch to a staggering £480m.”
Paper Round’s view: The back pages have been rife with rumours linking Messi with huge money moves to City, neighbours Manchester United and Chelsea over the last week after the player’s alleged dust-up with Barca manager Luis Enrique and a cryptic quote from the player himself at the Ballon d’Or gala. But £480m? It may be transfer rumour silly season, but we’re still over two months away from April 1.

Palermo reject United bid for Dybala: Palermo have rejected a bid for highly-rated 21-year-old Argentine striker Paulo Dybala. That’s the latest news coming out of The Guardian, who quote the club’s president Maurizio Zamparini via Italy's Radio Due as saying, “Dybala is worth over €40m [£31m] but I won’t sell him until June. Many foreign clubs asked after him, including Manchester United. I told the English side that he is not for sale right now, but we can talk about it again in six months. In my view, he is the best striker in Europe at the moment.”
Paper Round’s view: For a player dubbed the ‘new Sergio Aguero’, it’s unsurprising that he’s courting interest from a number of big teams. The club president’s insistence that he is the best striker in Europe may raise a few eyebrows, as may his insistence that he’s unavailable. United have an open cheque book, so can Palermo afford to refuse a mega-bucks January bid if one comes along?
- - -
United open talks for £30 million MarquinhosAnother young player that United may be somewhat closer to signing is PSG defender Marquinhos. That’s according to Metro, who report that talks between the two clubs are already underway “and the 20-year-old could push for the switch to happen after falling behind David Luizin the pecking order.”
Paper Round’s view: The 20-year-old centre back is highly rated in France and this is certainly an area that United need to address as soon as possible. PSG paid £30m for the player in 2013 and could be willing to part with him if he has fallen out of favour, although they will also want to make their money back.

Four players Manchester United should sign instead of £117m Gareth Bale

.

As the competition for the Champions League places heats up, the pressure levels are increased and Manchester United will now be hoping their experience prevails.
Locked in a five-way battle for third and fourth spot, United are aiming to outrun SouthamptonArsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool in the coming months to achieve their season goal of qualifying for Europe.
Last season was a huge shock for the players when they finished seventh under David Moyes and they don’t want a repeat of that under Louis van Gaal. United are a title-winning side and lifting trophies is something the fans, players and club are used to.
It wasn’t like that before the work former boss Sir Alex Ferguson did at the club during his reign as he made the Red Devils into one of the most successful clubs in history and one that many top players wished to play for.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Paul Scholes have all walked through the doors of Carrington and made their names, while the likes of Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic are just a couple of names who have followed their footsteps recently.
And now with Van Gaal in charge, he is hoping to make his own memories and so far he’s done that with some marquee signings. Despite results not going United’s way throughout the season, the 63-year-old has added quality with Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Daley Blind arriving to name a few. It bodes well for the future but you can also see that extra spice is needed to make them an elite side once again.
.
Gareth Bale goal map
United lack pace and it has troubled them – especially on away days – and that’s something that needs to change, so with that said, the Daily Star have reported today that the Red Devils have bid £117 million for 25-year-old Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale.
The world-record price will raise eyebrows, especially as players are needed in a number of positions so spending such a large fee on another attacking player could hurt their chances of landing other key targets.
As a result, we have taken a look at four players United should sign with that huge sum of money instead.
Right-back: Nathaniel Clyne (£20+ million - via the Mirror)

.
Nathaniel Clyne (PA Sport)
United are in need of a right-back and the soon to be 24-year-old fits the bill perfectly.
Clyne is mature, quick and an England international who has no fear. So far this season, you could say he has been one of Southampton’s best players alongside Dusan Tadic and Morgan Schneiderlin.
The trio have looked composed and confident under new boss Ronald Koeman - it wouldn’t be a surprise to see all of them at a bigger club in the next two years with one arriving at Old Trafford. However, for United and Clyne specifically, they should be moving to secure his services early with his contract running out in 2016, according to Goal.
The former Crystal Palace defender played during Sunday’s 1-0 win over United and his performance was impressive. Clyne was able to sniff out attacks and he kept Luke Shaw, 19, pegged back with the Englishman failing to beat his opposite number on a number occasions.
United’s current first-choice defender Rafael has been plagued by injuries this season and United who are used to having strong wing backs need assurances ahead of a hectic next season. Clyne is that man.

Centre-back: Mats Hummels (£35 million - via the Mirror)

Mats Hummels has endured a nightmare season with Dortmund (Reuters)
It has been a very interesting 12 months for the German World Cup winner and that is set to continue heading into 2015 with his current club in a somewhat crisis.
Borussia Dortmund, a team used to challenging for the Bundesliga title and European honours, are currently in a relegation battle with the side struggling massively in the league.
The 25-year-old has played a part in that despite his injuries and manager Juergen Klopp will be looking for a revival when the season gets back underway.
Hummels has been injured for half of the campaign but he’s still managed 10 appearances, though his fitness is a worry and Van Gaal will most likely want a defender who is capable of playing regularly for such a large fee.
He doesn’t quite have that yet with Phil JonesChris Smalling and Jonny Evans always picking up knocks and United need a consistent leader after the departure of Vidic, who served the clubs so well during his eight years at Old Trafford.
.
Mats Hummels' appearance chart
Although Hummels is having an average season so far, his stats of winning 63% of his headed duels while completing over 70% of his take-ons will impress Van Gaal.
Diego Godin from Atletico Madrid is another target, according to the Daily Star, but with Hummels’ future the more uncertain, United should focus their eyes on the Dortmund rock.
Centre midfield: Kevin Strootman (£35 million - via the Daily Star)
.
Kevin Strootman.
The Dutchman has to be included and it’s no surprise with his name always linked to the club.
Ever since Van Gaal arrived in July, Strootman's name has been on people’s lips with the pair enjoying a close connection.
The Roma midfielder was the Netherlands' main player in their World Cup qualifying campaign and he was set to be the focus of everything that went into their quest for a first world title. However, it wasn’t to be with the 24-year-old suffering a devastating blow when he damaged ligaments in his knee late on in the season – forcing him to miss the tournament in Brazil.
Eight months on, having recovered and returned to full fitness, Strootman is now back in the first-team and playing regularly again under Roma boss Rudi Garcia. Many reports have said that the midfielder is keen on joining United, but the deal may not happen until the summer. He’s managed an 85% passing accuracy this season but his strength and presence will give United another dimension.
Marouane Fellaini is currently that player for the club but with Strootman’s ability to be more mobile, it could be a real boost if United secure the Dutchmen.
.

Attacking midfield: Marco Reus (£20 million buyout clause, according to Karl-Heinz Rumenigge - via Bild)
.
Marco Reus (AFP)
United are in for Bale but why not just look at Reus, a player with the same talents who will cost considerably less.
Reus is hot property across Europe at the moment and with Barcelona unable to buy players until 2016, many clubs have been alerted including United.
It’s now reported (via Daily Star) that Bayern MunichChelsea and United are all to varying degrees interested in his signature but the Red Devils could be one step ahead after letting Shinji Kagawa go back to the German side in the summer. Football is a business and a good relationship with the club always helps certain sides when it comes to transfers.
This could be the case for United and Van Gaal should move for the 25-year-old goalscoring midfielder. Reus has been unlucky this campaign with injuries but last season he was a regular who could complete a large number of games.
.
Marco Reus duels graphic
He can regain that form with a full pre-season’s training and United are aware of that. So far in this 2014/15 campaign the Dortmund man has netted three goals this season while creating 20 opportunities. He has also completed 56% of his take ons in just seven games.
That’s an impressive double stat and the German alongside Di Maria in midfield could be the spark the Old Trafford outfit need. Reus also works hard (won 59% of his tackles this season) and with Van Gaal’s strict philosophy of putting the opposition under pressure without the ball he is the perfect fit for the Dutchman
