Chelsea are tracking Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi.
The Daily Star says the Argentine striker has been linked with a £32m switch to Liverpool but sources on the continent suggest Chelsea are in pole position to sign him.
Roberto Mancini's side are struggling in ninth place in the Serie A table and sporting director Marco Fassone admits the club's spending plans for next season depend on Champions League football returning to the San Siro.
He is quoted by Fichajes as saying: "In January there are no plans to sacrifice players, but at the end of the season can occur.
"We have already planned spending for next summer. No Champions League, some outputs may be unavoidable."
