Chelsea lose ground on leaders as Hammers hold firm

Chelsea lost valuable ground on leaders Manchester City as a resolute West Ham defence earned a valuable draw for the relegation candidates.
As expected, the hosts dominated the match in terms of possession, Oscar going closest to breaking the deadlock by hitting the bar in the opening half as Adrian was made to work hard in the West Ham goal.
The visitors were not without chances of their own, both James Tomkins and Andy Carroll squandering good scoring opportunities. But Chelsea always looked the more likely and the introduction ofFrank Lampard almost snatched all three points, Adrian denying the midfielder a last gasp winner and his sixth in as many matches against his former club with a fine save.
There was also late controversy as Samuel Eto’o had the ball in the net after Adrian turned his back to take a free-kick, but the referee’s whistle had already gone.
The result means that Chelsea stay third, three points behind new leaders and their next opponents Manchester City, who thumped Tottenham 5-1 away. West Ham stay third from bottom, a point above Cardiff City after becoming the first team to keep a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge.
KEY MOMENTS
PRE MATCH: Sam Allardyce hands bench spots to new on loan Italian signings Antonio Nocerinoand Marco Borriello.
5’ – PENALTY SHOUT FOR WEST HAM: Downing’s cross finds Carroll at the back post. He chests it down and turns inside Azpilicueta and there’s contact. Carroll goes down but referee Neil Swarbrick is unmoved.
8’ – CHELSEA HIT THE WOODWORK: Willian crosses to Oscar and his curling effort is touched onto the bar and behind by Adrian. Good save.
11’ – GOOD SAVE CECH: Downing whips in a free-kick and Tomkins heads towards the far corner. It’s creeping in before Cech palms it into Nolan and behind for a goal kick.
26’ – BIZARRE INJURY FOR DIAME: He chases a long ball and mistimes his kick to keep it in, instead clattering over the advertising hoardings and into the Chelsea fans. He eventually scrambles clear but hobbles off five minutes later with a suspected thigh and calf problem.
44’ – GREAT SAVE ADRIAN: The Hammers keeper keeps the scores level by saving Terry’s point blank header with his legs from Willian’s corner.
45+3’ – ETO’O FORCES A GOOD SAVE: Oscar’s shot falls at his feet and his snap shot is well bundles behind from Adrian.
60’ – CARROLL SPURNS GLORIOUS CHANCE: The big man has a great chance to open the scoring from Downing’s cross but swings at air instead of making the net bulge.
64’ – LAMPARD NEARLY SCORES WITH FIRST TOUCH: Willian sets him up buy Taylor dives in to block his shot.
72’ – LAMPARD CLOSE AGAIN: He cuts inside Taylor but the defender recovers to make another excellent block.
90+3’ – BA HITS THE POST: Hazard crosses it in and the striker diverts against the foot of the post.
90+4’ – ETO’O GOAL RULED OUT: He puts the ball in the back of the net as Adrian’s back is turned but the referee had already blown for a free-kick.
90+5’ - GREAT SAVE ADRIAN: He denies Lampard a goal from the last kick with a key save.
KEY STATS
Chelsea have won 12 and lost just one of the last 16 Premier League meetings with the Hammers.
Chelsea failed to score for the first time in their last 21 games at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea dropped only their third point of the season at home.
West Ham became the first side to keep a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge this season.
TALKING POINT: Did Eto’o score at the death? The Chelsea players surrounded the referee at the full-time whistle as Eto’o thought he’s won it with another of his opportunistic goals. But it was clear the whistle had gone before Adrian turned his back to take the free-kick.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Matthew Taylor (West Ham): Put in a heroic defence effort in the middle of the park and it was easy to lose count of the countless goal saving blocks he put in as he flung his body on the line again and again. A superhuman effort.

Manchester City destroy Spurs to go top

Premier League, White Hart Lane - Tottenham Hotspur 1 (Capoue 59) Manchester City 5 (Aguero 15, Toure 51, Dzeko 53, Jovetic 78, Kompany 89)

Manchester City ran riot against Tottenham as they moved to the top of the Premier League table with a 5-1 victory at White Hart Lane.
With Arsenal dropping two points at Southampton on Tuesday, City had the chance to move one point clear of the Gunners with a victory. And Manuel Pellegrini's men made no mistake, producing a dominant display throughout against a Spurs side who had Danny Rose sent off.
City came out of the blocks firing and did not have to wait long for an opener, with Sergio Aguero producing a superb finish to dink the ball over Hugo Lloris after a clever pass from David Silva.
Despite dominating the play, City, who lost Aguero to injury in the first half, had to wait until after the break for a second - Yaya Toure converting from the penalty spot after Rose saw red for bringing down Edin Dzeko.
The away side were soon 3-0 up following a Dzeko strike, with the Bosnian converting a rebound after Silva had his shot saved by Lloris. Tottenham, however, pulled one back instantly through substitute Etienne Capoue, who got on the end of a dangerous Christian Eriksen corner.
There was to be no remarkable comeback, though, as City took their foot off the gas and kept possession, before Stevan Jovetic, a replacement for Aguero, made sure of the result late on, with captain Vincent Kompany adding extra gloss to the scoreline at the death.
KEY MOMENTS
15’ – AGUERO MAGIC – A lovely goal from City as Silva plays in Aguero, who dinks the ball first time past Lloris, rolling it into the bottom corner of the net.
45’ – AGUERO MISERY – Aguero is forced to come off after sustaining an injury, with Jovetic coming on for the Argentina international.
50’ – OFF! – Rose is given his marching orders after bringing down Dzeko in the penalty area. It looked a harsh decision from the referee.
51’ – FROM THE SPOT – Toure doubles City lead as he sends Lloris the wrong way from the penalty spot.
54’ – NUMBER THREE – Dzeko soon makes it three for City as he converts the rebound after Silva first sees his shot saved by Lloris, following some nice work by Zabaleta.
59’ – COMEBACK? – Spurs pull one back through substitute Capoue, who fires into the back of the net after City fail to deal with an Eriksen corner.
78’ – GAME OVER – Jovetic makes sure of the result, finding the bottom corner of the net with a deflected effort after being played in by Fernandinho.
89’ – CAPTAIN KOMPANY – Kompany grabs City’s fifth in the game’s closing stages as he converts into an empty net after Dzeko's shot deflects kindly into his path.
KEY STATS
City have now scored five or more goals in four Premier League matches this season, equalling their 2011/12 record.
City are the second team to score five goals away at Tottenham this season, following Spurs’ 5-0 loss to Liverpool.
Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood suffered his first Premier League loss tonight since taking over at White Hart Lane.
City have won eight Premier League matches in a row - the best ever winning streak for the club in the Premier League.
TALKING POINT
Can Manchester City win the Premier League? After the victory at Tottenham, Manuel Pellegrini’s men are now top of the Premier League table, one point clear of second-placed Arsenal. They have been the outstanding team of the season so far, racking up a stunning 68 goals in the process. What’s more, their dodgy away form seems to be behind them as they are now 12 Premier League games unbeaten.
MAN OF THE MATCH
David Silva (Manchester City): City's Spanish marvel was at the heart of several of the goals in a superb all-round performance.
PLAYER RATINGS
Tottenham: Lloris 7, Walker 5, Chiriches 5, Dawson 5, Rose 5, Lennon 6, Bentaleb 6, Dembele 5, Sigurdsson 5, Eriksen 6, Adebayor 5. Subs: Naughton 6, Capoue 6, Holtby 6.

PSG finalise £20m Cabaye signing

The French giants made the announcement on social media ahead of a press conference for this evening, when the Newcastle playmaker is expected to talk about becoming a PSG player.
PSG had a £14 million bid rejected for the 28-year-old on Sunday but then returned with a significantly improved offer - reportedly £19m, rising to £20m based on performances - in a successful bid to get their man.
Cabaye has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with PSG.
The French international has been in the form of his life for Newcastle this season, and Alan Pardew had hoped to keep the player who has been at the heart of his team's good season so far.
But a move to the big-spending French champions, and the lure of Champions League football, convinced Cabaye to return to his homeland two-and-a-half seasons after leaving Lille for Newcastle.
"I could not leave last summer but when I had this opportunity (to join PSG), they stuck to our agreement," Cabaye told reporters.
"I will never forget the two years and a half I spent there and I really want to thank them.
"I'm very, very happy to be here tonight, really proud of getting the chance to take part in PSG's immense project.
"It's hard to say no to PSG for a player. I want to win trophies and this club gives me the opportunity to do so. I did not hesitate at all."
The Magpies are expected to make a move for a replacement in the remaining two days of the transfer window, with Lyon's Clement Grenier their rumoured target.
Meanwhile, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has ruled out a move for Barcelona star Lionel Messi.
The big-spending French club are believed to be one of the few teams who could afford to sign the 26-year-old Argentinian.
However, Al-Khelafi said there was not a bottomless pit of money for team strengthening.

Wenger slams Mourinho fixture dig

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hit back at old rival Jose Mourinho's claim that his side get an easy ride on fixtures and says he would be willing to trade millions in television income for a greater say in how his team's matches are scheduled.

Chelsea boss Mourinho said last week that the Gunners get a certain "influence" when it came to their schedule, something Wenger was eager to refute as he prepared for the trip to Southampton.
"In the last five years all the objective studies that have been made show Arsenal had less rest than any other team in the top four," he said.
"That is facts. It has nothing to do with my opinion. It is an independent company that made (the study) that shows Arsenal had less rest than any other team in the top level."
It is understood that the study Wenger referred to was conducted as part of an internal analysis of Arsenal's fixture programme.
He admits he would be prepared to accept a smaller sum from broadcasters if it meant greater control of when Arsenal played.
"Nobody is to blame, it's just the way the fixtures are sold," the Frenchman said.
"It is the television who decide. I cannot even blame the Premier League because the television has the last word. If they say for example they want Arsenal v Liverpool on Sunday, it will be on Sunday.
"I can understand the television but the question you can ask, the way when it is sold, (clubs) take £50 million less and keep the command."
When asked if he would do that, he added: "Yes, but I am in football."
February will see the Gunners face Liverpool twice - once in the Barclays Premier League and also in the fifth round of the FA Cup - as well as Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
The Liverpool cup encounter is scheduled to be played on the weekend of February 15-16, just a few days ahead of the Champions League last-16 first-leg showdown with the Bundesliga giants on Wednesday, February 19.
No date has yet been set for the Liverpool match but as one of the stand-out ties it is almost certain to be televised, which could see Arsenal preparing for the Munich clash with a Sunday afternoon kick-off against the Reds.
The Gunners boss would like to see a rule set across all leagues to make sure everyone prepares the same ahead of key European ties.
When asked if he felt more could be done to help his side prepare for European competition, Wenger said: "Let's turn it the other way around, you cannot do less; because you do nothing. In other leagues (they help), yes.
"I already suggested in a UEFA meeting to make sure in the Champions League that the teams have the same time of rest.
"For example, in Porto they cancelled the games sometimes. The day before the Champions League they cancelled a game. For the competition it would maybe be better if all the teams had exactly the same rest."
Wenger believes that is necessary to factor in the highs and lows of football, which he compared to the life of a drug user.
"Sometimes after a game you go on a high and it is like a guy who takes drugs. You go on a high, energy, you have to go down and to have a bit more time helps you to be up for it again," he said.
"We went out to Blackburn (in the FA Cup last season) and it was a humiliation and to recover from that in three days is very difficult."
With Arsenal still alive in three competitions - they can go four points clear in the Premier League on Tuesday if they win at Southampton - but as they look to earn a first trophy in nine years, Wenger is not planning to prioritise any competition.
"We are not at a stage where we can have a choice," he said.
"We play the Champions League after the FA Cup - if I sacrifice the FA Cup and we go out in the Champions League you look stupid, so (the approach) is just to go for it and hope it goes well and keep, as long as you can, in all of the competitions."
The dispute over fixtures is not the first time that Mourinho and Wenger have disagreed with each other - in fact it is not the first time this month after the Portuguese said last week that complaining is "normal" for Wenger in light of comments he made about Juan Mata's transfer to Manchester United.
The exchange, though, is nothing to do with mind games, according to the Arsenal boss.
"It is not mind games. It is opinions. But I don't live with opinions, I live with facts. And the facts don't depend on me or Mourinho," he said.
"It is depending on objective analysis. A day is 24 hours. And you count how many times you have rest between games.
"I did (not) make this study, it was made by an independent company. I cannot influence that."
Wenger makes the trip south with a doubt over Jack Wilshere's ankle, but he does have Mikel Arteta (calf), Aaron Ramsey (thigh) and Thomas Vermaelen (calf) fit again.

Anelka rejects Lazio offer

Nicolas Anelka: Not leaving West Brom
Nicolas Anelka: Not leaving West Brom
Nicolas Anelka says he has rejected offers to move abroad and wants to stay at West Brom.
Striker Anelka is facing a Football Association charge over his controversial "quenelle" gesture.
He made what is regarded as an anti-Semitic salute after scoring against West Ham last month and he could be facing a minimum of a five-match ban if found guilty.
Anelka had been reported to be ready to leave England because he was angry at the furore the quenelle caused, a gesture he insists is not racist.
The forward says he had offers from at least one club - Lazio - and hinted that whatever happens, he will leave the Baggies at the end of the season.
"Thanks to Lazio and all the other clubs who wanted to sign me these last days. See you this summer if I decide to continue (playing)," Anelka wrote on Twitter.
"But the question is why should I leave my club and England? I'm happy here and I did nothing wrong.
"So now it's time to stay focused on my football with my club and I will try my best on the pitch like I always do."
Anelka insists the gesture, which has been described as an inverted Nazi salute, was a tribute to his French comedian friend Dieudonne M'Bala M'Bala who invented it.
The striker is available for selection by West Brom until the FA makes its decision.
Anelka joined West Brom on a one-year deal, with a further year's option in the club's favour, last summer.
Shortly after the Barclays Premier League match at Upton Park in which he struck the 'quenelle' pose, Albion released a statement saying they accepted the celebration had caused some offence and that Anelka had been asked to refrain from doing it again - with the player agreeing to do so.
They have continued to select him since and he started their last game, a 1-1 home league draw with Everton on January 20, just hours after the Baggies' sponsors Zoopla announced they had decided to end their association with the club.
That match was also new West Brom head coach Pepe Mel's first in charge.
And at a press conference on Monday to preview his next - Wednesday's league away clash with midlands rivals Aston Villa, which will be Albion's first game since Anelka was charged - the Spaniard indicated he intends to keep selecting the frontman.
Asked if Anelka would play against Villa, Mel said: "He has a 99 per cent chance, yes.
"I have already spoken with Anelka and the only thing he wants to do is help the team beat Aston Villa.
"I think he showed against Everton that he has absolutely no problem.
"The most important thing for me as the head coach is his performance on the pitch.
"Stephane Sessegnon (who is injured) is the only player who is not available - everyone else is available and Anelka, for me, played well against Everton."

Arsenal confirm Wenger to sign new contract, announce Puma deal

Puma will become the kit supplier to Arsenal from July 1 in a deal worth over £30m a year, while Ivan Gazidis had more good news for fans.

Arsenal chief executive Gazidis said at the formal confirmation of the kit deal: "We are excited to be partnering with Puma, a company whose football heritage and record of innovation have a strong affinity with our own. This represents another important step forward in Arsenal's progression on and off the pitch."
When asked about the contract status of his manager, Gazidis gave Arsenal fans the news they wanted to hear and said: "Arsene will be extending with us and at the right time we will make that announcement."
Though Arsenal have not won a trophy in eight years, their form this season and the inspired capture of Mesut Ozil has led to renewed hope that another era of success under Wenger is forthcoming.
Puma is ousting US group Nike which has provided Arsenal's red and white shirts for the past two decades.
The agreement shows Puma's determination to re-establish itself as a core sports brand under new CEO Bjoern Gulden after moving more into lifestyle and fashion.
Puma has also acquired the rights to produce other branded Arsenal merchandise that will be sold to fans around the world.
Financial details were not disclosed but Puma said the deal was the biggest ever for both itself and Arsenal.
In 2012, Arsenal signed a contract renewal with airlines Emirates for shirt and stadium sponsorship worth £150m over five years.

Wenger responds in fixtures row

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hit back at old rival Jose Mourinho by saying his team…

Puma, which supplies kit to German club Borussia Dortmund and national teams including Italy, said it was aiming to establish itself as the clear number-three football brand.
Adidas and Nike dominate a global market worth an estimated 4.5 billion euros per year, and US brands such as Under Armour and Warrior have also been expanding in the sport.
"Arsenal represents a major commercial and marketing opportunity to reinforce Puma's credibility as a global sports brand," Gulden said in a statement.
The Puma deal is no surprise after news of it leaked on social media late last year. However, Arsenal fans are likely to press the club to spend heavily before the player transfer window closes at the end of the month to boost the team's push for a first trophy since 2005.
Nike remain the kit suppliers to Manchester United and Manchester City.

Premier League - Juan Mata chooses No 8 shirt, relishes Rooney link-up

Juan Mata has revealed he is relishing the chance to link up with Wayne Rooney as well as the pressure of his club-record price tag, after choosing the number eight shirt at Manchester United.

The Spain international has moved to Old Trafford from Chelsea for £37.1million.
The 25-year-old should provide the creativity and invention which has been sadly lacking from David Moyes' team this season and he can not wait to play alongside Rooney.
"For me he is one of the best players in the history of this country," Mata said at his unveiling.
"He is unbelievable, he can score and he can assist.
"I will try to connect with him as much as I can. I will try to find the gaps in rival defences, try to be in the positions I have to be in to assist the strikers."
Asked about the pressure that comes with his price tag, Mata said: "I like the pressure, I think it's good for a footballer to try to improve.
"People are expecting big things from me and I am looking forward to it."
Mata surprised many by rejecting United's fabled number seven shirt in favour of the number eight recently vacated by midfielder Anderson, who has gone on loan to Fiorentina.
The seven shirt had been worn by Antonio Valencia, who changed to 25 at the start of the season citing the additional pressure in wearing a number previously graced by George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo among others.

FA Cup - City to face Chelsea, Arsenal play Liverpool in last-16

Manchester City's quest for the quadruple will see them face Chelsea in the last-16 of the FA Cup.

The top four sides in the Premier League will fight it out against each other in two mouthwatering clashes.
"No problem - if you want to be the best, you have to play the best," said Chelsea manager Mourinho after the draw, which puts them into a match away at a Manchester City who have not lost at home all season in domestic competitions.
"It'll be a great experience for us. It'll be a big game."
Arsenal's draw throws up an extraordinary sequence of matches for the Gunners: in the space of 11 days from February 8, they will faceLiverpool and Manchester United in the league, then Liverpool in the FA Cup, and three days later Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Everton boss Roberto Martinez will take on his former club Swansea in another stand-out fixture, while Sheffield Wednesday were drawn against Charlton to ensure that at least one non-Premier League side will make it to the quarter-finals.
Matches will be played on 15th and 16th Februrary.
FA Cup Fifth Round Draw
Manchester City v Chelsea
Sheffield United or Fulham v Nottingham Forest or Preston North End
Arsenal v Liverpool
Brighton & Hove Albion v Hull City

Premier League - Mata completes record-breaking move to Manchester United

Juan Mata has completed his move to Manchester United for a club record fee of £37 million

"I am thrilled to be joining United," said the Spanish star, who is expected to be given the club's iconic number seven shirt, as worn by players including George Best, Eric Cantona and David Beckham.
"I have enjoyed some very happy years at Chelsea but the time has come for a new challenge. United is the perfect place for me and I am excited at the chance I have to be part of the next phase in the club's history.
"Today is a very happy day... It’s a massive club and I feel very proud to be here.
"Chelsea is a top club and I have many friends there but you cannot turn down the chance to join Manchester United. I look forward to helping the manager and the team be successful in the coming years."
The previous club record signing was Dimitar Berbatov, who United paid £30.75m for in 2008, and David Moyes was delighted to have landed a major transfer coup.
"Juan is one of the finest playmakers in the game today and it's a real pleasure to have secured his signature," said Moyes.
"He's been instrumental in Chelsea's recent success, with a notable 28 assists and 32 goals in his last two Premier League seasons.
"I have been impressed with the excitement he has shown to be part of the new Manchester United. I know our fans have admired Juan for some time now – he has always played well against us – and I know they will be delighted to see him in the red of United, starting on Tuesday."

Why Mata IS the new Cantona

The deal marks a potentially huge upturn for Moyes, with news leaking on Saturday that Wayne Rooney is now set to sign a new contract worth as much as £300,000 a week that will keep him at Old Trafford for the rest of his career.
United had announced on Friday evening they had agreed a fee to sign Spanish playmaker Mata, who will cost the club £37.1m.
Mata arrived in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon as he stepped off a helicopter at Carrington to undergo his medical tests.

Mourinho wishes Mata well at United

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has no fears after sanctioning Juan Mata's imminent move to M…

David Moyes was on hand to meet the two-time Chelsea Player of the Year, who was dressed in a smart suit with a pocket square.
Since joining from Valencia for £23.5m in August 2011 Mata has twice been voted Player of the Year at Stamford Bridge but slipped below Eden Hazard, Willian and Oscar in the midfield pecking order this season.
Chelsea being prepared to sell Mata, twice their Player of the Season and a huge fans' favourite, to rivals United has raised eyebrows and even led Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to suggest Chelsea are "playing" with the transfer window.
Wenger's point was that Chelsea have already played United twice this season so will not have to face Mata in a red shirt.
Predictably, Mourinho dismissed Wenger's claims and launched an attack against what he thinks is Arsenal's preferential treatment in the fixture list.
"Wenger complaining is normal because that's what he does all the time," Mourinho said.
