Bayern Munich and Arsenal drew 1-1 in their Champions League last 16 second leg at the Allianz Arena, but the German side progressed to the quarter-finals 3-1 on aggregate.
Pep Guardiola's Champions League holders were in control of the tie after a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium three weeks ago, and more or less put matters to bed when Bastian Schweinsteiger accepted a pass from Franck Ribery to lift the ball over Lukasz Fabianski in the visiting goal from eight yards out on 54 minutes.
Arsenal rescued a draw on the night three minutes later when Lukas Podolski latched onto a ball from Olivier Giroud before smashing a powerful drive past Manuel Neuer, who was beaten at his near post by the energy of the shot. Podolski appeared to push Philipp Lahm in the back to earn possession, but the goal was allowed to stand much to the annoyance of the home side.
Arjen Robben's diving was an unsporting feature of the match, and he earned a soft penalty when he dived after being barely nudged on the heels by Laurent Koscielny a minute into four added on.
It was perhaps justice that Fabianski saved home substitute Thomas Mueller's penalty with his feet after diving to his right. Arsenal escaped with a draw, but the damage was more or less done three weeks ago when the German side enjoyed a 2-0 win in London.

19' - RIBERY RUN: A fabulous, probing run by Ribery. He picks out Robben, but the volley is drilled into the ground before dropping over the bar. Chance for Bayern. Not taken.
25' - MARTINEZ GOAL RULED OFFSIDE: Fine finish from a Thiago delivery, but the goal won't stand. The referee has called that correctly.
30' - GIROUD HEADER: Giroud sends a header at the target from the Ozil corner, but didn't have the direction to beat Neuer in the home goal.
45' - OZIL DEPARTS INJURED: The German international is replaced by Tomas Rosicky at half-time due to a tight hamstring.
53' - ROBBEN PLAY-ACTING: Robben with a clear dive. Cazorla nowhere near him. Should have been booked for that. Awful piece of play-acting.
54' - BAYERN STRIKE: Bastian Schweinsteiger with the finish from the Ribery pass. Lovely Bayern move. Arsenal's defence caught out at the back. Cool and composed from eight yards. No chance for Fabianski.
57' - ARSENAL LEVEL: Podolski works a lovely one-two with Giroud before smashing the ball straight into the net. Neuer beaten at his near post. It is 1-1 on the night.
89' - BAYERN EARN PENALTY: Robben goes to the deck under pressure from Koscielny, and that is a penalty to Bayern.
90+1' - FABIANSKI HEROICS: Fabianski dived to his right, but somehow kept the ball out with a foot heading in the opposite direction. Mueller then penalised for a late foul following up on the Arsenal keeper.

TALKING POINT: What can Arsene Wenger take from his side's European campaign?Arsenal seem to lose every season at this stage of the tournament. There is no disgrace in going down to Bayern Munich over the past two seasons, but the harsh facts of life continue to support the theory that the Premier League team do not possess a squad strong enough to compete at this level with any degree of certainty.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal): Put in a real shift for the visiting side. Just a shame most of his best work was done in his own half. England coach Roy Hodgson will be pleased with the youngster's contribution in World Cup year.
