South African Kevin Anderson ended Lleyton Hewitt's 16th and final Queen's Club appearance with a first-round win over the former Wimbledon champion.
Australian Hewitt, 34, a four-time winner at Queen's, had the opportunity to serve for the match in the second set but suffered a 6-7 7-5 6-2 defeat.
Anderson, 29, ranked 17th in the world, will face Nick Kyrgios or Stan Wawrinka in the second round.
"This has been one of my favourite tournaments," said wildcard Hewitt.
"I love the whole month in London. I'm going to have so many great memories in this tournament."
Fernando Verdasco, Richard Gasquet and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez also went through on Monday, with Britain's James Ward also on court to face third seed Milos Raonic.
British number one Andy Murray starts his Queen's campaign against qualifier Yen-Hsun Lu on Tuesday, as does Rafael Nadal, who faces Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov.
