Former Aston Villa striker Emile Heskey believes Neil Lennon“has what it takes” to become the club’s next manager.
The Villans are searching for a new boss after dismissing Paul Lambert on Wednesday, with the club falling into the Premier League drop zone for the first time this season after a 2-0 defeat against Hull City.
Lennon has only been in charge at the Macron Stadium since October, after an impressive four-year spell at Celtic, and signed the ex-England striker in January.
But Heskey, who joined Villa from Wigan in 2009, claimed his former Leicester team-mate is “tailor-made” to manage at a big club.
Speaking to Drivetime, Heskey said: “I definitely think he has got what it takes. People forget what he did at Celtic, he had a phenomenal time at Celtic as manger, beating Barcelona in the Champions League.
“He has had a phenomenal career up to now and now he has taken Bolton to another level as well, considering we were low on confidence he brought that back and brought a lot of players in who have enhanced the club.
“He is tailor-made for a big club.”
And Heskey claimed he was not surprised to hear of Lambert’s departure, but admitted the former Norwich boss was faced with a difficult job throughout his tenure.
“They’ve been on a slippery slope for a while; he has had a difficult job just trying to keep them in the league and not really having much to spend," he added.
“Villa generally started the season very well, [but] inevitably when they don’t get the results then thats when the fans start turning on you and you’re in trouble.”
