Serena Williams wins her 20th Grand Slam with battling French Open victory

Serena Williams completed a rollercoaster fortnight with French Open glory, beating Lucie Safarova 6-3 6-7 6-2 to secure the 20th Grand Slam title of her career.
Safarova, the 13th seed, had shocked Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanvoic to reach the final at Roland Garros, and admirably took the undisputed world number one to three sets in sweltering conditions.
Williams, who has suffered with a fever and dizziness in her previous rounds in Paris, comfortably took the opening set, before the Czech player fought back by edging a second set tie-break.
Safarova then broke the American to lead 2-1 in the decider, before Williams reeled off five games in a row to earn her third straight Grand Slam victory, after success at the US and Australian Opens.
Williams is now just four major titles short of Margaret Court’s record of 24, and with Wimbledon on the horizon on her favoured grass court surface, the chances of the 33-year-old surpassing that total seems increasingly likely.
